Spatial Patterns

Spatial patterns are recurring configurations of space that produce recurring social effects — arrangements that appear across many different buildings, settlements and cultures because they solve a persistent problem of human co-presence.

The term is used on this site in connection with the space syntax tradition and with Christopher Alexander's pattern language, two bodies of work that approach the same observation from opposite directions.

Two Approaches

Space syntax arrives at pattern analytically. Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson decompose a layout into its constituent spaces and the relations of permeability between them, then compute measures — integration, choice, depth — that turn out to correlate strongly with observed movement, encounter and use. Their finding of genotypes is the key one: cultures reproduce consistent configurational patterns across buildings that look nothing alike, so that domestic layouts in a region share a deep structure their styles conceal.

A Pattern Language arrives at pattern normatively. Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa and Murray Silverstein's 1977 book documents 253 patterns at every scale, from "Independent Regions" down to "Alcoves," "Light on Two Sides of Every Room" and "Six-Foot Balcony." Each is stated as a recurring problem and a form of resolution, with the empirical evidence for it. Alexander's claim is that these are discovered rather than invented — that they recur because they work, and that a building assembled from patterns that fit will possess the "quality without a name" that he spent his career trying to specify.

The traditions differ on whether patterns are descriptive regularities or prescriptive goods, and they disagree about method. What they share is the claim that spatial arrangement is not aesthetic preference but a determinant of behaviour, and that the determination is regular enough to be studied.

Examples of Spatial Patterns

  • Depth and shallowness. How many spaces must be crossed to reach a room from the street, which governs who can plausibly arrive there.
  • Through-movement versus dead ends. Spaces on a route between destinations generate encounter as a by-product; spaces at the end of a branch do not.
  • Thresholds and transitions. The graded sequence from public to private, and what happens where it is compressed or absent.
  • Edges. Alexander's observation that people occupy the boundaries of a space before its centre, which is why a plaza with no edge stays empty.
  • Light on two sides. A room lit from two directions is used; a room lit from one is not, regardless of total illumination.

Beyond Buildings

Because both traditions treat configuration rather than material, they transfer. Alexander's pattern language was the acknowledged model for software design patterns, brought across by Ward Cunningham and Kent Beck — and the wiki itself was built to hold a pattern repository. Space syntax measures apply to any system in which the number of steps between two places and the visibility of one from another determine who meets whom, which includes information architectures, menu hierarchies and social platforms.

Relevance to Cyborg Anthropology

Spatial patterns are the clearest demonstration that arrangement produces behaviour without anyone intending it. A layout does not tell people what to do; it changes the probabilities of encounter, and social life is assembled from those probabilities. The same is true of an interface, and it is the reason design decisions that look purely technical have social consequences their authors did not choose.
