Subject

Digitally mediated urban space refers to city space as it is experienced through and structured by digital systems — a condition in which movement, encounter, commerce and perception in a city are routed through software layers that are not visible in the built fabric.

The phrase belongs to a cluster of overlapping terms from the same period, each proposed by a different research community for approximately the same object: hybrid space (Adriana de Souza e Silva), code/space (Rob Kitchin and Martin Dodge), DigiPlace (Matthew Zook and Mark Graham), augmented space (Lev Manovich) and networked place (see Place: The Networking of Public Space).

The Core Claim

All of these formulations reject the two-worlds model — a physical city and a separate virtual one — and argue instead that the digital layer is constitutive of the physical experience rather than parallel to it.

Kitchin and Dodge's Code/Space (MIT Press, 2011) gives the sharpest version. They distinguish coded space, where software mediates an activity but the activity survives software failure, from code/space, where the two are mutually constituted and the space ceases to function as itself without the code. An airport check-in area is their standing example: when the system fails, it does not become a slower check-in area, it stops being a check-in area at all and becomes a room full of stranded people.

Zook and Graham's DigiPlace work makes a complementary point about visibility: what a person finds in a city is increasingly determined by search ranking, so that two people standing in the same street are presented with different cities, ordered by criteria neither can inspect. Consequences

  • Access is mediated by ranking. A business absent from the dominant map or ranked low in it is, for practical purposes, not there.
  • Failure has spatial effects. Software outage produces immediate physical consequences — stalled transit, inoperable buildings, unusable payment systems — that planning frameworks do not model.
  • Sorting is invisible. Dynamic pricing, routing, and recommendation differentiate what a city offers to different people without either party being able to see the differentiation.
  • Ownership. The mediating layer is overwhelmingly privately owned, which places a substantial part of urban experience outside public accountability.

Relevance to Cyborg Anthropology

This is the urban-scale version of the field's central premise. Just as a person and a device in relation constitute something not describable as a person using a tool, a city and its software constitute something not describable as a city with computers in it. The code/space distinction is the most useful practical test available: ask what an arrangement becomes when the software stops.
