Definition
Wood grain is the pattern of fibre, growth rings and figure visible on the surface of cut timber — a record of how a particular tree grew, in what conditions, over how many years.
What Grain Is
The pattern is not decoration applied to a material; it is the material's history made visible. Each ring is a growing season. Wide rings record good years, narrow ones drought or shade. Knots mark where branches were. Reaction wood records a lean the tree was correcting against. Figure — quilting, curl, burl, medullary ray — is the trace of stresses and irregularities in growth.
The consequence for design is that no two pieces are the same, and none of them can be specified. A manufacturer can choose a species, a cut and a finish, and cannot choose the pattern. Every unit differs, which is a defect in a manufacturing process and a virtue in an object someone will live with.
Interesting properties of wood and wood grain
- It communicates without signalling. Grain carries information — species, age, quality, orientation — through a channel that costs nothing to attend to. It is legible in the periphery, which is exactly the criterion in calm technology.
- It ages legibly. Wood darkens, takes marks, and wears at the points where it is touched most. An object that records its own use accumulates a history and tends to be kept; an object that only degrades looks broken and tends to be replaced. See future runoff and natural material.
- It is warm to the touch. Wood conducts heat away from the hand slowly, so it reads as warm where metal and glass read as cold. This is a physical property, not an association, and it is available whether or not the device is powered — the presence dimension Gumbrecht argues is systematically neglected.
