			Yi-Fu Tuan (5 December 1930 – 10 August 2022) was a Chinese-American geographer, generally described as the founder of humanistic geography. Born in Tianjin to a diplomat's family, he was educated in China, Australia, the Philippines and Britain, took his BA and MA at Oxford and his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley in 1957, and taught at Indiana, New Mexico, Toronto and Minnesota before settling at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was J. K. 			Tuan supplies the vocabulary for what happens when technology alters the pause. Place, in his account, is made by dwelling and attention — and location-aware, always-connected devices systematically substitute space for place, converting the pause into transit and the room into a coordinate. His distinction also transfers cleanly to interfaces, which are undifferentiated space until repeated use makes them somewhere.
