		The string a system uses to distinguish one account from another. It functions as an address, an identifier, and in many contexts a name that other people read and respond to.

		=== Origin ===

		Usernames come from multi-user time-sharing computer systems, where a machine shared among many people needed a way to attribute files, sessions, and charges to individuals. The requirement was accounting, and the identifier was assigned by an administrator rather than chosen. Personal selection of usernames came later, with bulletin board systems and networked services.

		=== Description ===

		A username sits between a legal name and a pseudonym without being either. It is durable enough to accumulate reputation and separable enough from the body to be discarded. The same person may run several at once, each with a different history and a different audience, which is what makes the username a unit of analysis rather than a technical detail.

		A username must be unique inside its namespace, so the supply of short and common ones is exhausted early, and the date of registration becomes visible in the name itself. Holding the same username across many services is a way of asserting that the accounts belong to one person, and this practice is the basis for identity consolidation on the web.
