			Donella H. "Dana" Meadows (1941–2001), American environmental scientist and systems analyst. Trained as a biophysicist at Harvard, she worked in Jay Forrester's system dynamics group at MIT and was lead author of ''The Limits to Growth'' (1972), the Club of Rome report modelling long-run interactions between population, industry, food, resources and pollution. She taught at Dartmouth and founded the Sustainability Institute, now the Donella Meadows Project.

			Meadows drafted the manuscript in 1993 and circulated it informally for years without publishing it. It appeared posthumously, edited from her draft by Diana Wright of the Sustainability Institute.

			The book is an introduction to system dynamics for readers with no mathematics and no modeling background. Meadows builds the vocabulary from a bathtub with a tap and a drain, a thermostat, and a warehouse ordering inventory.

			For instance, a '''stock''' is an accumulation — water in a tub, money in an account, population, carbon in the atmosphere, trust in an institution. '''Flows''' fill and drain it. '''Feedback loops''' connect the state of a stock back to the flows: '''balancing''' loops resist change and hold a system near a goal, '''reinforcing''' loops amplify it and produce exponential growth or collapse. '''Delays''' between a change and its perception are, in her account, the single most common source of oscillation and overshoot, because decision-makers act on information that is already old.
