==Introduction==
Omotenashi (おもてなし) describes a form of hospitality organised around anticipation. The host prepares for needs the guest has not yet expressed, and the preparation is not mentioned. A request that has to be made represents a small failure of the arrangement.

The word is usually traced through the tea ceremony, where the host's work happens entirely before the guest arrives: the room aired, the scroll chosen for the season and the company, the water at temperature, the sequence of the garden path set. The related phrase ichigo ichie (一期一会), one time, one meeting, holds that each gathering is unrepeatable and should be prepared for accordingly.

* Preparation is invisible. Work the guest can see becomes a performance, which returns the burden to the guest.
* There is no transaction frame. The service is not itemised, upsold or acknowledged with an expectation of tips, which is consistent with the general absence of tipping in Japan.
* The standard is the individual guest rather than a uniform script, which means the host has to have observed something.

A service built this way does not need to:
*Ask what the guest wants
*Present options at the moment of need
*Announce what has been done
*Be rated in order to improve

The design consequence is that most of the work lands in defaults, and the defaults have to be correct for the person actually present. Anticipation applied to a stranger produces intrusion instead.
