	~~Known~~ for the Panopticon		===Biography===
			Jeremy Bentham (15 February 1748 – 6 June 1832) was an English philosopher, jurist and social reformer, and the founder of modern utilitarianism. A child prodigy who read Latin at three and entered Queen's College, Oxford at twelve, he trained for the bar but never practised, spending his life instead on the reform of law, punishment, poor relief and government. He was a founding influence on University College London, and an advocate — well ahead of his contemporaries — of the separation of church and state, freedom of expression, equal rights for women, the decriminalisation of homosexual acts, the abolition of slavery and of physical punishment, and animal welfare.

			===The Panopticon===
			Bentham is best known today for a building he never built. Visiting his brother Samuel in Krichev, in what is now Belarus, in 1786, he found that Samuel had designed a circular workshop allowing a small number of supervisors to oversee unskilled labourers. Bentham took the architectural idea and generalised it into an institutional principle, publishing it as ''Panopticon; or, the Inspection-House'' (1791).

			The design places cells around the inside of a circular building, backlit, with an inspection tower at the centre. Blinds, baffles and lighting mean the inmate can never determine whether he is being watched at any given moment. The essential move is that surveillance need not be continuous, only ''possible''. Because the inmate must assume he may be observed, he supervises himself, and the cost of discipline collapses. Bentham called it "a new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind, in a quantity hitherto without example."

			He spent roughly sixteen years and much of his own money pressing the scheme on the British government, which granted £2,000 in 1794 for preliminary work and then abandoned the project in 1803. He received £23,000 in compensation in 1813. The failure embittered him considerably and pushed him toward political radicalism.

			===Influence and the Auto-Icon===
			Michel Foucault's ''Discipline and Punish'' (1975) made the Panopticon the emblem of modern disciplinary power, arguing that its logic — visibility as a trap, power made automatic and disindividualised — is the diagram of the school, the hospital, the factory and the barracks as much as the prison. Nearly all subsequent writing about surveillance, including work on databases, CCTV and platform monitoring, argues with or against this reading.

			Bentham's body, at his own instruction, was dissected before an audience of friends and preserved as an "auto-icon" — the skeleton padded and dressed in his own clothes, seated in a wooden cabinet. It passed to University College London in 1850 and remains on public display there.

			===Relevance to Cyborg Anthropology===
			The Panopticon is the standard reference point for asymmetrical visibility, and its central insight — that internalised, uncertain observation is cheaper and more effective than continuous watching — describes networked systems better than it described any prison.
