			Guy Louis Debord (28 December 1931 – 30 November 1994) was a French Marxist theorist, filmmaker and the central figure of the Situationist International. He came to Paris as a young man through the Lettrist milieu, co-founded the Situationist International in 1957, and effectively directed it until he dissolved it in 1972. He made six films, refused academic and media appearances almost entirely, and lived largely outside institutions. Its opening thesis states the argument: "In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all of life presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation."

	~~====Subproject (if applicable====~~		The spectacle, for Debord, is not television, advertising or mass media as such — a misreading he complained about for the rest of his life. It is "not a collection of images, but a social relation among people, mediated by images." It is the stage capitalism reaches when the commodity has colonised social life so completely that appearance becomes the organising form of experience: people relate to one another through representations, and the passive contemplation of those representations replaces the direct living of a life. Thesis 30 gives the mechanism: "The spectator's alienation... is expressed as follows: the more he contemplates, the less he lives."

			Debord is invoked constantly and read carelessly, and the difference matters. The common claim that social media "is the spectacle" gets the structure wrong in an interesting way: Debord's spectator is passive, and the platform user is not — they produce the images, and their labour is the product. Whether this refutes the analysis or completes it is a live argument, and Debord anticipated part of it, arguing that participation which cannot change the terms of the arrangement is a more efficient form of the same passivity.

			Détournement is the more directly useful legacy. The reply image, the recaptioned screenshot and the [[Meme\|meme]] format are détournement industrialised — and the fact that the technique now serves advertising as readily as it once attacked it is the sharpest available illustration of Debord's own thesis about recuperation.
