About
Aaron Parecki is a Portland-based iPhone and PHP developer interested in solving practical problems with technology. In his free time, he enjoys geolocation, linguistics, and building home automation systems and IRC bots with a sense of humor. Since 2008, he has been tracking and visualizing his location every 6 seconds, making him a frequent presenter at the Portland data visualization group. His fascination with location sharing and GPS began at the age of 6, when he traced the routes of family road trips on a map with a highlighter. He combined these interests and created Geoloqi.com with Amber Case in an effort to help people connect in the real world.
Biography
Amber Case is a Cyborg Anthropologist and the founder of Geoloqi, Inc., a company bringing the future of location to the world. She studies the interaction between humans and computers and how our relationship with information is changing the way cultures think, act, and understand their worlds.

Case has spoken at various industry conferences including MIT's Futures of Entertainment and Inverge: The Interactive Convergence Conference, Ignite Portland and Ignite Boulder. She presented an Introduction to Cyborg Anthropology at Portland's Webvisions 2009 and Gnomedex 9.0 and Keynoted Portland's Open Source Bridge with a speech on Cyborg Citizens. She's been a guest lecturer at Lewis & Clark College, Pacific Northwest College of Art and Oregon State University’s School of Continuing Education.

Case formerly worked at Wieden+Kennedy, a global advertising agency based in Portland, Oregon.
Cyborg Anthropology is a way of understanding how we live as technosocially connected citizens in the modern era. Our cell phones, cars and laptops have turned us into cyborgs. What does it mean to extend the body into hyperspace? What are the implications to privacy, information and the formation of identity? Now that we have a second self, how do we protect it?

This text covers various subjects such as time and space compression, hyperlinked memories, panic architecture, mobile technology, interface evaporation and how technology is changing the way we live.

Useful for researchers, scientists, interface designers, developers, professors, students, and anyone who engages with or wishes to better understand technology and culture.

Foreword by Douglas Rushkoff
When I finally met Amber Case - whose writing and experiments I had been following for several years - I felt as if I had at last come in contact with the next iteration of human being. I have been writing about "screenagers" and "digital natives" since the early 90's, and interacting with one form or another of cyberpunk, hacker, or programmer since before even that.

But coming face to face with Amber one rainy night in Portland, on the stairs to a bar no less, was like meeting the future I had always envisioned. We immediately found a step to share, and spent a half hour exchanging notes at breakneck speed. She jotted down ideas and phrases into her iPhone while I jotted them down with a pen on the little pad I carry around (of course we took a moment to compare form factors and usage patterns).

We ended up spending the majority of our antenna-touching simply exchanging our glossaries. "This is my term for when such and such happens," and "this is the way I express the feeling when..." Sure, we shared many of the same insights and experiences, but we seemed most concerned with arriving at a terminology - as if being able to name what was happening to us would help us cope with it better. At the very least, having a word or phrase we agreed on somehow ensured that we were describing the same phenomenon. That we were on the same page or, in more cyborg parlance, in sync.

Of course, Amber is a generation or maybe two generations younger and more advanced than me at this point (younger generations being the latest model of human being, after all), and so her facility with and immersion in the cyborg society is more advanced than my own. I may have seen this all coming, but Amber is the coming, itself. And unlike most of her peers - brilliant though they may be - Amber doesn't simply muse on possibilities for a digitally engaged, gamified, and interactive society; she actually tests her hypotheses in the real world by launching everything from big games to research studies.

That's why when Amber comes out with an entire book (as well as a living, growing web project) on the ever-expanding lexicon of the cyborg, we had all best take notice. For herein lies an effort to identify, codify, and articulate how what it means to be a human being is changing in a digital age. By developing a language for the era of cyborgs, Amber is not just reporting on the digital frontier, but contextualizing and creating it. Just as God created the world with a word (read the beginning of the Bible for that part), Amber - and the greater Cyborg Anthropology community - are building reality in real time.

My only real concern here is that readers not mistake the emerging reality depicted here for a dehumanized, pre-programmed, robotic landscape. Humans may soon become more intimate with machines and programs, but this doesn't mean we become more machine-like, ourselves. If we can manage to disconnect the future of technology from the industrial-age massification of labor and production that we just went through for the past five hundred years, we become capable of envisioning an implementation of technology that enhances the human, heightens the senses, and magnifies our agency. Just as eyeglasses help the old lady see her new grandson, our technologies can forge entirely human-to-human connections, enable mind-to-mind intimacy, and promote collaborative activities on a scale unimaginable to our pre-digital forebears.

So even if cut-and-paste becomes an approach to sexuality and genetics instead of just documents, this doesn't mean we will necessarily corrupt the code of human spirit beyond all recognition. We are, indeed, moving into an era when our tools will more than match the limits of our intentions. With nano, robotics, genomics, and programming, we do more than simply make stuff; we make stuff that goes on to make more stuff. We create robots and programs and entities that then go make new versions of themselves.

The intentions we embed into these technologies will live on. These are things not made or manufactured, but birthed and launched. They become partners that co-exist with us on the cyborg landscape, and through their very presence they highlight for us what makes us uniquely human - and them not.

In order to navigate this new terrain of our own making, we deserve a language for describing and conceiving it. Call me old fashioned, but without the words, we have no idea what we are doing.
Description
"ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING explores the importance of maps as aids to navigation, understanding, and cultural representation. Traditionally written by history’s victors, maps are gaining new currency in our information-saturated age as a means of making arguments and processes visible. Mapping technologies today are as diverse as the agendas driving them: the human body is mapped with 3-D software, buildings are mapped with lasers, and cities are mapped by satellite.

ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING proposes—by visual example and written analysis—that mapmaking is a fundamental design process, one that shapes the physical and conceptual dimensions of contemporary multicultural society.

ELSE/WHERE: MAPPING is the second installment in an international visual/verbal collaboration focusing on the design implications of new technologies. It follows the award-winning book IF/THEN: PLAY, published in 1999, and is designed by Amsterdam studio Mevis + van Deursen."
Definition
A hyperlinked memory is a phrase used to describe the process of accessing one's memory through data stored in an external device. It is used to describe the idea of an externalized memory on a device. Vehicles transport the physical self, but now computers transport the mental self and store memories. When one forgets the location of a memory, it can be said to be on the tip of one's tongue. Often, a keyword or other item will trigger that memory later, or allow one to access it. If one forgets the location of an Email or file, one must remember the keyword to enter that will trigger that memory. On a search engine, one triggers a collective brain with keywords. The structure of these databases is not so different from one's own brain. The only difference is that memories are queried outside the brain vs. the inside of the brain.

Anthropologist Micheal Wesch noticed that the social clout of teenagers was related to storytelling. Those that told the best stories that riffed off of the current group topic had the highest clout in the situation. When YouTube became available, he watched teenagers exchange playing videos for each other in place of these stories. The group member with the best hyperlink to an externalized memory or externalized story gained social clout for telling it. Examples include cities that have open data sets that allow citizens to interface with a city's data. Some cities release data and encourage developers to build applications on top of it.

This type of process speeds up error correction, detection and understanding in a city. It also provides government officials and city workers a way to utilize data from citizens without hiring additional workers or stretching themselves too thin. The idea behind a City as Software is that the city becomes a site of evolotion, of error detection and improvement that is detected and corrected by everyday citizens instead of a handful of people employed on behalf of the city.

Open Government advocate Max Ogden points out that governments are good at providing data, but they are not close enough to the problems of the city and community to understand how to create the best interface for that data. Thus, a government's job should be to provide open data, and a citizen's job should be to build on top of that data and make it useable to the city.

An example of open government data was given on UrbanOmnibus. Developers have written mobile transit trackers and in some cases, software has been created that provides citizens with a variety of congenial ways to initiate trouble tickets, whether they're most comfortable using the phone, a mobile application or website, or a text message. "Then...you apply the usual variety of visualizations to the live data, allowing patterns to jump right out. Which city department has the best record for closing out tickets most quickly, and with the highest approval rating? What kind of issues generally take longest to address to everyone's satisfaction?"

Ogden created a smell map of Portland, Oregon that allowed citizens to geotag and report smells around the city. The data that came back provided insights not only into the particular regions of the city, but environmental hazards as well. When the city understood the power of placing data reporting into the hands of citizens, they commissioned Ogden to build another version of the app that allowed citizens to report toxic smells. This helped the city to isolate and identify toxic spills and environmental issues that individual city inspectors didn't have the ability or resources to measure.

Ogden also created an API for the City of Portland called PDXAPI. The API took data in awkward-to-use formats and parsed it out so that it could be easily read in a browser and used in a number of citizen-oriented applications.

Definition
An Avatar is a pictorial representation of a person. Online, many people can connect only through the avatar. Avatars have become placeholders for bodies that exist far away from each other.

Online, individuals can act as companies through branding themselves through text and a photo. Similarly, a business can represent itself as an individual through a friendly, approachable avatar. On social networks, says Kathryn Everest, “pictures have become essential -- especially facial representations that are positive. It is completely how people connect as people -- especially as we’re becoming more virtual. It removes us from being just a database record". People are more likely to trust human photos on social networking sites rather than logos, and all have higher acceptance rates. Thus, an avatar has become not only a placeholder for the body, but also a placeholder of meaning.

History
Originally, Avatars were the physical embodied forms that Gods used to interact with mankind. The term suggests a representation of an entity that has a surplus of meaning and thus needs a placeholder. Shiva, Vishnu, Zeus, and many other Gods manifested in various forms, such as animals or iconic symbols, in order to communicate in a way that humans could understand. If we heed Stewart Brand's call in the first Whole Earth Catalog at the dawn of the computing age: "We are as Gods and might as well get used to it", the concept becomes even more interesting. The term will always imply a lack in representation, and thus a corresponding excess in the entity represented. Avatars allow us to communicate in new realities that are "thinner" than our manifested reality, but also allow us to be much more than a mere collection of pixels on a screen. Avatars lie at the heart of performative theories of representation, with the user having relatively free range as to how their virtual second self is portrayed.

Royalty also used portraits in a similar way to how people use avatars on dating sites. A portrait artist would spend a long time on a commissioned portrait of someone and send it off to another country. Of course, these portraits were often much more flattering than the person looked in real life, so both parties often surprised each other when they finally met for the first time during the marriage ceremony.

Definition
A wearable computer is a computer that is subsumed into the personal space of the user, controlled by the user, and has both operational and interactional constancy, i.e. is always on and always accessible. Most notably, it is a device that is always with the user, and into which the user can always enter commands and execute a set of such entered commands, and in which the user can do so while walking around or doing other activities".

History
The first person to pioneer the idea of being able to compute anywhere and be connected was Steven Mann, the inventor of Wearable computing. He thought that humans should not contort to computers, but that computers should contort to humans. He wore 80 pounds of computing equipment, including a wireless uplink to an early manifestation of the Internet (MIT's local Internet) starting in 1979. As time progressed, computing became lighter, and Steve Mann’s load became less burdensome while still retaining the same functionality. Similarly, computers have jumped from gymnasiums to desktops to pockets.

Steve Mann envisioned a future in which hardware could be downloaded in as easily as software. Where one’s contact lens prescription could change during the day based on one’s needs. A future where a device morphs is the most fluid and liquid that an interface can become. Interfaces today are limited by their external structure. This limitation will dissolve when the hardware dissolves.

WearCam: The Wearable Camera
Dr. Mann's WearComp invention dates back to his high school days in the 1970s and early 1980s, where he was experimenting with wearable computing and personal imaging as a personal hobby . "Unlike other wearable devices (wristwatches, regular eyeglasses, wearable radios, etc.), a WearComp is as reconfigurable as the familiar desktop or mainframe computer. Unlike other computers (including laptops and PDAs), a WearComp is inextricably intertwined with its wearer - WearComp's "always ready" characteristic leads to a new form of synergy between human and computer".

Modern Wearable Computing
Although the Internet is invisible and seemingly omnipresent, it is only accessible by two-dimensional interfaces on physical machines in connected fields. It has only been a recent occurrence that we’ve been able to carry around complex computational interfaces in our pockets, increasing technological capabilities into our everyday lives. Until this point, one had to be in a certain time and place in order to access computing power. This usually meant a college or university, and sometimes between the hours of 3 and 6 Am.

Steve Mann's Formal Definition of Wearable Computing
Steve Mann formally defined wearable computing in terms of its three basic modes of operation and its six fundamental attributes.

Operational modes of wearable computing
There are three operational modes in this new interaction between human and computer.
Constancy
The computer runs continuously, and is always ready to interact with the user. Unlike a hand-held device, laptop computer, or PDA, it does not need to be opened up and turned on prior to use. The signal flow from human to computer, and computer to human runs continuously to provide a constant user interface.

Augmentation
Traditional computing paradigms are based on the notion that computing is the primary task. Wearable computing, however, is based on the notion that computing is NOT the primary task. The assumption of wearable computing is that the user will be doing something else at the same time as doing the computing. Thus the computer should serve to augment the intellect, or augment the senses.

Mediation
Unlike hand held devices, laptop computers, and PDAs, the wearable computer can encapsulate us (Fig. 1c). It doesn't necessarily need to completely enclose us, but the concept allows for a greater degree of encapsulation than traditional portable computers. There are two aspects to this encapsulation:

Solitude
It can function as an information filter, and allow us to block out material we might not wish to experience, whether it be offensive advertising, or simply a desire to replace existing media with different media. In less severe manifestations, it may simply allow us to alter our perception of reality in a very mild sort of way.

Privacy
Mediation allows us to block or modify information leaving our encapsulated space. In the same way that ordinary clothing prevents others from seeing our naked bodies, the wearable computer may, for example, serve as an intermediary for interacting with untrusted systems, such as third party digital anonymous cash "cyberwallets".

Six Attributes (Signal Paths) of Wearable Computing
There are six informational flow paths associated with this new human-machine synergy. These signal flow paths are, in fact, attributes of wearable computing, and are described, in what follows, from the human's point of view:

Unmonopolizing of the user's attention
(The Wearable Computer) does not cut you off from the outside world like a virtual reality game or the like. You can attend to other matters while using the apparatus. It is built with the assumption that computing will be a secondary activity, rather than a primary focus of attention. In fact, ideally, it will provide enhanced sensory capabilities. It may, however, mediate (augment, alter, or deliberately diminish) the sensory capabilities.

Unrestrictive to the user
Is ambulatory, mobile, roving; "you can do other things while using it". E.g. you can type while jogging, etc.

Observable by the user
Can get your attention continuously if you want it to; within reasonable limits (e.g. that you might not see the screen while you blink or look away momentarily) the output medium is constantly perceptible by the wearer.

Controllable by the user
The system must be controllable by the user in the idea that one can grab control of it anytime they wish and can be used as a communication medium when you want it to.

Attentive to the environment
It is environmentally aware, multimodal, multisensory. (this ultimately increases the user's situational awareness).
Communicative to others: it can be used as a communications medium when you want it to.

Expressive
It allows the wearer to be expressive through the medium, whether as a direct communications medium to others, or as means of assisting the production of expressive media (artistic or otherwise).

Expressive
Allows the wearer to be expressive through the medium, whether as a direct communications medium to others, or as means of assisting the production of expressive media (artistic or otherwise).

Implied by the above six properties is that it must also be:

Constant
Always on, running, and ready. May have "sleep modes" but is never "dead" (unlike a laptop computer, which must be opened up, switched on, and booted up before use).

Personal
human and computer are inextricably intertwined.

Prosthetic
You can adapt to it so that it acts as a true extension of mind and body; after time you forget that you are wearing it.

Assertive
Resists, if you wish, prohibition or requests by others for removal. This is in contrast to a laptop, in briefcase or bag, that could be separated from you by the "please leave all bags and briefcases at the counter" policy of a department store, library, or similar establishment.

Private
Others can't observe or control it unless you let them.

Future of Wearable Computing
The whole of the Internet is an invisible, 4th dimensional potentiality with portals of different sizes, shapes, and capabilities. The hardware determines the size of the portal, the connection determines the rate of information flow, and the software/web browser and the sites within that web browser determine the rate of information absorption into the mind. The rate of information absorption is dependant upon the format of the information presented. Wearable Computers will evaporate over time until they are no longer noticeable or are proper ubiquitous extensions of the self, as valuable and as iconic as sports cars and external transport structures for the physical body. Their interfaces will be invisible.

Definition
The Whole Earth Catalog was a countercultural publication by writer Stewart Brand that was popular in the late 60s and early 70s. Brand started the catalog after going around the country in his van selling useful items to budding communes. The introduction of the first 1969 article explains the purpose of the catalog in all of it's grandiose glory:

<blockquote>We are as gods and might as well get good at it. So far, remotely done power and glory—as via government, big business, formal education, church—has succeeded to the point where gross defects obscure actual gains. In response to this dilemma and to these gains a realm of intimate, personal power is developing—power of the individual to conduct his own education, find his own inspiration, shape his own environment, and share his adventure with whoever is interested. Tools that aid this process are sought and promoted by the WHOLE EARTH CATALOG.</blockquote>

At the core of the catalog was the idea that technology could connect us in new ways and help us be better people. The catalog has an eclectic mix of technologies, books, guides, and poems to help accomplish this task. Steve Jobs called the Whole Earth Catalog "Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along", while Kevin Kelly notes that "Brand invented the blogosphere long before there was any such thing as a blog".. The Whole Earth Catalog proved to be a model and inspiration for many thinkers who later laid the foundations of the internet. The poem "All watched over by machines of loving grace", printed in the first Whole Earth Catalog, captures the ideals of the publication quite well:

All watched over by machines of loving grace
<blockquote>
I like to think (and<br />
the sooner the better!)<br />
of a cybernetic meadow<br />
where mammals and computers<br />
live together in mutually<br />
programming harmony<br />
like pure water<br />
touching clear sky.<br />
<br />
I like to think (right now, pleasel)<br />
of a cybernetic forest<br />
filled with pines and electronics<br />
where deer stroll peacefully<br />
past computers<br />
as if they were flowers<br />
with spinning blossoms<br />
<br />
I like to think (it has to be!)<br />
of a cybernetic ecology<br />
where we are free of our labors<br />
and joined back to nature,<br />
returned to our mammal<br />
brothers and sisters,<br />
and all watched<br />
over by machines of loving grace.

Biography
“Marshall McLuhan, CC (July 21, 1911 – December 31, 1980) was a Canadian educator, philosopher, and scholar—a professor of English literature, a literary critic, a rhetorician, and a communication theorist. McLuhan's work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory, as well as having practical applications in the advertising and television industries”
Quotes
"In the electric age we wear all of mankind as our skin."
Marshall McLuhan

"The automobile is an extension of your feet, clothing an extension of your skin, glasses an extension of your eyes, the internet an extension of your nervous system". ~Marshall McLuhan

"The computer is the most extraordinary of man's technological clothing; it is an extension of our central nervous system. Beside it the wheel is a mere hula-hoop". Marshall McLuhan, War and Peace in the Global VIllage (quoted in [[Cyborg: Digital Destiny And Human Possibility In The Age Of The Wearable Computer
|Cyborg]] by Steve Mann, 1).

We become what we behold. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.
Marshall McLuhan

Publication is a self-invasion of privacy.
Marshall McLuhan

Our Age of Anxiety is, in great part, the result of trying to do today's job with yesterday's tools and yesterday's concepts.
Marshall McLuhan

In this electronic age we see ourselves being translated more and more into the form of information, moving toward the technological extension of consciousness.
Marshall McLuhan

For tribal man space was the uncontrollable mystery. For technological man it is time that occupies the same role.
Marshall McLuhan

As the unity of the modern world becomes increasingly a technological rather than a social affair, the techniques of the arts provide the most valuable means of insight into the real direction of our own collective purposes.
Marshall McLuhan

As technology advances, it reverses the characteristics of every situation again and again. The age of automation is going to be the age of 'do it yourself.'
Marshall McLuhan

Art at its most significant is a Distant Early Warning System that can always be relied on to tell the old culture what is beginning to happen to it.
Marshall McLuhan

A commercial society whose members are essentially ascetic and indifferent in social ritual has to be provided with blueprints and specifications for evoking the right tone for every occasion.
Marshall McLuhan

The spoken word was the first technology by which man was able to let go of his environment in order to grasp it in a new way.
Marshall McLuhan

Understanding Media (1964)
"Hot" and "cool" media
“In the first part of Understanding Media, McLuhan also stated that different media invite different degrees of participation on the part of a person who chooses to consume a medium. Some media, like the movies, were "hot"—that is, they enhance one single sense, in this case vision, in such a manner that a person does not need to exert much effort in filling in the details of a movie image. McLuhan contrasted this with "cool" TV, which he claimed requires more effort on the part of the viewer to determine meaning, and comics, which due to their minimal presentation of visual detail require a high degree of effort to fill in details that the cartoonist may have intended to portray. A movie is thus said by McLuhan to be "hot", intensifying one single sense "high definition", demanding a viewer's attention, and a comic book to be "cool" and "low definition", requiring much more conscious participation by the reader to extract value” (McLuhan, p. 22).
