Light Diffusion

Definition

Light diffusion is the process by which light is scattered or spread out when passing through a translucent or semi-transparent material. This phenomenon transforms direct, concentrated light into a softer, more evenly distributed illumination.

Physical Principles

Optical Mechanism

  • Light waves interact with material surface
  • Redirects light in multiple directions
  • Reduces sharp shadows and harsh light
  • Softens and spreads light intensity

Types of Diffusion

Transmission Diffusion

  • Light passes through material
  • Transforms direct light to soft, even illumination
  • Materials become light source themselves
  • Examples:
 - Frosted glass
 - Tracing paper
 - Specialized diffusion filters

Reflection Diffusion

  • Light bounces off surface
  • Scatters in multiple directions
  • Reduces direct glare
  • Examples:
 - Matte white walls
 - Textured surfaces
 - Specialized reflective materials
