Definition

Synchronous communication describes the act of communicating with another person in a real-time feedback loop. Synchronous communication can be carried out over digital devices synchronously through instant message and other real-time messaging systems, and also through SMS in some cases if messages are responded to as they are received. Video calls are another type of synchronous communication, as information is not stored long enough to be asynchronous as in the case of Email and letters, where communication is stored in an external medium for later retrieval by a recipient or set of recipients.
